Camellias

Camellias

Camellia was first encountered in China, some 5.000 years ago, but it grows naturally everywhere in South-East Asia, from Nepal to China, in Korea, Japan, Indonesia, etc. In China and Japan it was grown not only for its decorative characteristics, but for culinary purposes too. We all know one of its most famous varieties, camellia sinensis, for tea.

Today, there are 100 to 250 species listed, depending on the botanists who classify them. The first camellia was introduced to Europe in 1752 by a Jesuit monk, father Camelli, or Kamel, where its name comes from.

Camellias are perfectly adapted to our climates and grow everywhere, in Belgium as well as England, Germany or France. Many collector friends use our products to grow them. One of them, M. Janewiez, sent us his photos and information.

Testimony

M. Janewiez grows in soil after enriching it with nutrients, or in pots.
He says : “I created the Société du Camellia d’Ile de France to allow members to keep their plants in good health, to help them grow them in good conditions, and especially to propagate them properly (sowing, grafting, layering, or cutting).
For cuttings, I use One Part (Total Grow, Total Bloom), G.O. Roots, BioProtect, and pH Down. For large plants, I collect rainwater.” M. Janewiez gave us permission to publish his email : camellia.idf@orange.fr, for amateurs who would like to have more information.

We never grew camellias in our greenhouses yet. We just started a camellia sinensis in an AquaFarm with Flora Series, Diamond Nectar, and Mineral Magic. To this we will certainly add the BioBoosters, as we know that they have a beneficial effect on plants in general.
